ChatGPT Atlas Explained: OpenAI's Retired Browser (2026)

ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI's own web browser, launched for Mac on 21 October 2025 and retired in August 2026. It put ChatGPT in a sidebar and added an agent mode that could act on websites. OpenAI has folded those ideas into the ChatGPT desktop app, so Atlas no longer works, and Windows, iPhone and Android versions never arrived.

ChatGPT Atlas was not a chatbot add-on. It was a full web browser, built on Chromium, with ChatGPT in a sidebar and an agent mode that could click through websites for you. It lasted a little over nine months, and the question most people now ask is what happened to it.

If you landed here because Atlas will not open, or an older guide told you to download it, this page sets out the timeline, what OpenAI has said, what took its place and what to do with any data left behind. It is based on OpenAI's own Help Center and announcements, plus named press coverage, all checked on 23 October 2026.

What was ChatGPT Atlas?

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Atlas on 21 October 2025 as “a new web browser built with ChatGPT at its core”. According to OpenAI's launch post, it launched worldwide on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro and Go users, with a beta for Business and, where an administrator allowed it, Enterprise and Edu. Versions for Windows, iOS and Android were described as coming soon.

Three features set it apart from an ordinary browser:

  • A ChatGPT sidebar that could answer questions about the page you were on, summarise it and rewrite selected text.

  • Browser memories, an optional setting that let ChatGPT remember context from the sites you visited. OpenAI said you could view or archive them in settings.

  • Agent mode, which could open tabs and click through websites to research or complete tasks. At launch it was a preview for Plus, Pro and Business users.

OpenAI was open about the risks of that last feature. Its own launch post warned that agents “are susceptible to hidden malicious instructions”, for example text hidden in a web page or email, and that its safeguards “will not stop every attack”. That caution is worth remembering for any AI tool that acts on your behalf.

Reviewers were lukewarm. In its hands-on, PCMag UK found that “practically any other browser is better than Atlas for standard web surfing”, and that agent mode could execute tasks more slowly than a human would.

Is ChatGPT Atlas still available?

No. OpenAI's Help Center retirement article says ChatGPT Atlas has been retired and no longer receives updates. A notice on the OpenAI developer community had warned in August that after 9 August 2026, Atlas “may no longer open, browse, or support browser-based agentic workflows”.

The public timeline is short:

  • 21 October 2025: Atlas launches on macOS.

  • 19 March 2026: CNBC reports that OpenAI will combine its browser, the ChatGPT app and Codex into a single desktop “super app”.

  • 9 July 2026: OpenAI discloses Atlas's retirement in a post introducing a revamped ChatGPT desktop app, as PCMag reported. An OpenAI staff member gave 9 August as the targeted date.

  • 9 August 2026: the date OpenAI set for Atlas to stop working.

That is roughly nine and a half months from launch to the shutdown date.

Why did OpenAI retire ChatGPT Atlas?

OpenAI framed it as a change of shape rather than a failure. PCMag quotes the company as saying the capabilities in its new desktop app “build on what we learned from Atlas and from the users who helped us understand how agentic tools can make browser-based work more useful”.

In other words, the browser was folded into the app. As far as we could find on 23 October 2026, OpenAI has not published a detailed post-mortem or usage figures for Atlas, so any claim about why people did or did not use it is speculation.

What the public record does show is that Atlas only ever ran on Macs, that the promised Windows version was cancelled, and that reviewers found it no better than the browsers people already had. OpenAI has not said so, but one cross-platform app is plausibly simpler to maintain than a separate browser.

What replaced ChatGPT Atlas?

The ChatGPT desktop app. PCMag's report describes the revamped app as combining OpenAI's Codex coding tool, a new built-in browser and “ChatGPT Work”, which can perform actions across your other apps and files. It is available on Mac and Windows, which Atlas never was.

OpenAI's own description, as quoted by PCMag, is that you can ask ChatGPT to research a market, compare sources, pull information from websites, or open and refine files from Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 inside the app. Which of those features you get depends on your plan, so check OpenAI's pricing page before relying on one.

We cover the app itself in our ChatGPT desktop app guide, and the action-taking features in what ChatGPT Work does and what agent mode is. If you only want answers with live web results, you do not need a special browser at all: see can ChatGPT search the internet.

What happens to your Atlas data?

OpenAI's retirement article says Atlas data does not move across automatically. In practice that means:

  • Bookmarks: not transferred. If you exported an HTML bookmarks file earlier, you can import it into another browser such as Chrome.

  • Open tabs and browser history: not transferred.

  • Cookies and signed-in sessions: you will need to sign in to websites again in your new browser. OpenAI says not to share cookie or session files with other people.

  • ChatGPT conversations: these are separate from Atlas browser data, so you can keep using them in ChatGPT, subject to your plan and account access.

Two details catch people out. Atlas browser memories are separate from ChatGPT memories, and deleting your ChatGPT chats does not delete Atlas data such as browser memories or cookies. If you want to ask about that data, OpenAI points people to its Privacy Portal and Support, and warns that recovery of anything you did not export is not guaranteed.

To remove the app from a Mac, use Apple's normal uninstall steps. OpenAI advises contacting Support before deleting local browser data if you still need something saved in Atlas. Was ChatGPT Atlas ever available in the UK?

Yes, in the sense that OpenAI said it was launching worldwide on macOS, and its announcement named no country exclusions. UK users with a Mac could download it. The catch is that most people browse on Windows, iPhone or Android, and Atlas never reached any of them.

If you are in the UK and see a website offering an Atlas download today, treat it with suspicion. The official product is retired, so anything claiming to be Atlas is not from OpenAI.

Should you use an AI browser instead?

AI browsers did not start or end with Atlas. Perplexity said on 2 October 2025 that its Comet browser was available to everyone worldwide, shortly before Atlas appeared. We have not tested Comet, so we make no claim about how it compares, but our ChatGPT vs Perplexity comparison and best AI chatbots roundup cover the assistants themselves.

Whichever tool you choose, the lesson from Atlas is to keep your own data portable. Export bookmarks now and then, avoid storing anything only in a single vendor's browser, and be careful about letting any agent act while you are signed in to banking or email. OpenAI's own warning about hidden instructions applies to every agentic browser, not just its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Atlas still available?

No. OpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT Atlas has been retired and no longer receives updates. It was scheduled to stop working on 9 August 2026, and OpenAI points users to the ChatGPT desktop app for browser-based work instead.

Was ChatGPT Atlas ever available on Windows?

No. OpenAI said Windows, iOS and Android versions were coming soon when Atlas launched in October 2025, but Atlas only ever shipped on macOS. PCMag reported that the retirement means the Windows version was cancelled.

Was ChatGPT Atlas free?

Atlas itself was free to download for Free, Plus, Pro and Go users at launch. Agent mode, which could act on websites for you, was a preview limited to Plus, Pro and Business users.

Does deleting my ChatGPT chats delete my Atlas data?

No. OpenAI says deleting ChatGPT chats does not delete Atlas browser memories, cookies or other Atlas-specific data, and that uninstalling Atlas or changing ChatGPT Memory settings should not be assumed to delete it either. Use OpenAI's Privacy Portal or Support for data requests.

Does removing Atlas cancel my ChatGPT subscription?

No. OpenAI states that removing Atlas does not cancel a ChatGPT subscription. You cancel through the platform that bills you, such as the App Store or the web, in the usual way.

What replaced ChatGPT Atlas?

The revamped ChatGPT desktop app, which PCMag reports combines Codex, a built-in browser and ChatGPT Work. Unlike Atlas, the desktop app is available on both Mac and Windows.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI's Mac-only AI browser, launched on 21 October 2025 and scheduled to stop working on 9 August 2026.

  • OpenAI says Atlas is retired. Its ideas now live in the ChatGPT desktop app, which runs on Mac and Windows.

  • Bookmarks, tabs, history and sessions do not transfer automatically, and Atlas data is separate from your ChatGPT chats and memories.

  • Removing Atlas does not cancel a ChatGPT subscription.

  • OpenAI has not published usage figures or a post-mortem, so reasons beyond its own statement are speculation.

The bottom line

ChatGPT Atlas was a short-lived experiment that OpenAI folded into its desktop app. If you used it, export what you can, check your data options with OpenAI, and move to the desktop app or another browser.
