How to change ChatGPT voice: open Settings, select Voice, then choose a voice from the list. OpenAI currently lists nine, including Juniper, Cove, Ember and Sol. Your choice applies to new voice conversations. If you change it mid-call, ChatGPT starts a new voice call in the same chat, and the options you see can vary by plan, region and app version.

Changing the voice in ChatGPT takes a few taps, but the setting is easy to miss, and what you see depends on your plan, your app version and which voice option you use. This guide shows exactly where the setting is, which voices OpenAI currently lists, and what to check when ChatGPT keeps using the wrong one.

Everything here is checked against OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice help article, which was updated on 22 October 2026, and its Voice feature page. Where the evidence is thinner, such as user reports of voices not applying, this post says so. For the full picture of how Voice works, our ChatGPT Voice Mode guide covers GPT-Live in depth.

How do you change the ChatGPT voice?

OpenAI says you choose your preferred voice in Settings. The path is the same wherever you use Voice, on the web or in the mobile app:

  • Open Settings in ChatGPT.

  • Select Voice.

  • Select Voice again to see the list of available voices.

  • Choose the voice you want. It becomes your preferred voice.

If you have never used Voice before, ChatGPT asks you to choose a preferred voice the first time you start a conversation. OpenAI's Voice page adds that you can always change it again in Voice settings.

To start a conversation, select the Voice icon in the message bar and allow microphone access if your device or browser asks. There is no separate download for Voice, and one Voice conversation can run at a time.

Which ChatGPT voices can you choose from?

On OpenAI's help page, the voice list currently has nine names, each with a one-line description of its personality:

  • Arbor: easygoing and versatile.

  • Breeze: animated and earnest.

  • Cove: composed and direct.

  • Ember: confident and optimistic.

  • Juniper: open and upbeat.

  • Maple: cheerful and candid.

  • Sol: savvy and relaxed.

  • Spruce: calm and affirming.

  • Vale: bright and inquisitive.

OpenAI also lists extra voices for Live in other languages, including Viola and Rio for Brazil, Aube and Rivage for French, Sonna and Miko for German, and Bubbie for English. It adds that the voices shown may vary by region and account, so your own list is the one that counts.

The page does not say which voices sound masculine or feminine, or what accent each one has. The safest way to choose is to try a few in a short conversation, because switching only takes a moment.

What is the difference between Live, Advanced and Standard?

The voice list is separate from the voice option. Under Settings and Voice you may also see three options, and OpenAI says what is available depends on your plan, workspace settings, region, app version and parental controls.

  • Live: powered by GPT-Live-1.1 or GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, depending on your plan. It listens and speaks at the same time, so interruptions feel more natural, and it can use web search and memory. It does not support video or screen sharing.

  • Advanced: the previous real-time Voice experience. OpenAI points to it when you need video or screen sharing in the mobile apps.

  • Standard: a turn-by-turn experience that transcribes your speech before ChatGPT writes a reply.

If you want the most natural back and forth, choose Live. If you need to share your screen or camera on mobile, switch to Advanced. If you only want to turn speech into a text prompt that you can edit before sending, OpenAI recommends Dictation rather than Voice.

Can you change the voice, language, tone or speed during a chat?

You can change your voice during a conversation, with one catch. OpenAI says changing the selected voice during a Voice conversation starts a new voice call in the same chat. Your text chat stays where it is, but the live call restarts.

Language works separately. If Voice detects the wrong language, open Settings, select Voice, then Language, and choose the language you speak most. You can also ask ChatGPT during a conversation to speak a different language.

Tone and pace are different again. OpenAI says the preset ChatGPT personalities do not currently apply to Live, but you can ask ChatGPT to change its tone, pace or response style in an individual conversation. You can ask it to speak faster or slower, though OpenAI says precise playback-speed controls are not currently available. For how ChatGPT writes in text, our guide to ChatGPT custom instructions is the better tool.

Two more settings sit in the same place. Background conversations let a conversation continue while you use other apps or when your phone is locked. Start with Voice, on supported mobile app versions, opens Voice automatically when you start a new conversation.

How long can you talk on each plan?

Changing the voice does not change your allowance, but your plan decides how much Live time you get. OpenAI measures Live usage in Chat over a rolling 24-hour period and tells you when you reach a limit. This is the list on OpenAI's help page, checked on 23 October 2026:

  • Free: limited access to GPT-Live-1.1 Quip. OpenAI says limits may change.

  • Go: 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1 Quip.

  • Plus: 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1.

  • Pro at $100 a month: 15 hours with GPT-Live-1.1.

  • Pro at $200 a month: unlimited GPT-Live-1.1, subject to abuse guardrails.

  • Business Standard: 3 hours. Business Premium: 15 hours. Extra usage on both uses 1.25 credits per minute.

OpenAI lists Pro in dollars on that page. For pounds, see our UK price guide, and for the wider picture across plans, read ChatGPT limits by plan or ChatGPT plans compared.

A conversation can also end when it reaches the maximum session length, or when a long chat reaches its context limit, according to OpenAI. You can carry on in text or start Voice again. OpenAI also describes a Voice experience in the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows, with separate pricing and limits. Our desktop app guide covers installing it.

Why will ChatGPT not use the voice you picked?

OpenAI's help page does not list a fix for a wrong voice, so treat this section as practical checks rather than official steps. Start with what the page does tell us:

  • Your options depend on your plan, region, app version, workspace settings and parental controls, so a voice you saw on a friend's phone may not appear on yours.

  • The voices shown may vary by region and account.

  • Changing the voice during a call starts a new call, so the old voice can carry on until the new call begins.

  • Live, Advanced and Standard are separate options, so check which one is selected.

There is also a record of user reports. In a thread on the OpenAI Developer Community started in January 2025, people said ChatGPT kept using a different voice from the one chosen in Settings on the web and the Windows desktop app, while the Android app worked as expected. Later replies described the same problem in the Android app and in project chats. These are user reports, not an OpenAI confirmation, and we could not find an official fix.

If your voice will not stick, a sensible order is to update the app, end the call and start a new Voice conversation, check which of Live, Advanced and Standard is selected, and then try a chat outside a project. Starting a new chat outside project files was one reader-reported workaround, and it is not an official fix. If none of that works, OpenAI's help chat is the place to ask.

Does the voice setting affect your privacy?

The voice you pick does not change how audio is handled. OpenAI says audio clips from Live and Advanced conversations are stored with the transcript in your chat history and kept for 30 days. Deleting a chat also deletes its clips within 30 days, unless OpenAI needs to keep them for security, safety or legal reasons. With Standard, the audio is deleted after transcription.

OpenAI also says it does not use your audio or video clips for training unless you choose to share them in Data Controls. For the wider picture, read our plain-English ChatGPT privacy guide. Frequently asked questions

How do I change the ChatGPT voice on my phone?

Open Settings, select Voice, select Voice again and pick a voice from the list. The same path works on the web. If it is your first Voice conversation, ChatGPT asks you to choose a voice when you start.

How many voices does ChatGPT have?

OpenAI's help page lists nine voices: Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale. It also lists extra Live voices for other languages. What you see can vary by region and account.

Can I make ChatGPT talk faster or slower?

You can ask it to during a conversation. OpenAI says precise playback-speed controls are not currently available, so the change is approximate rather than exact.

Why does ChatGPT sound different from the voice I chose?

Common causes are a different option selected (Live, Advanced or Standard), a region or account difference, or a call that restarted after a change. Users have also reported voices not applying since 2025, and we could not find an official fix.

Can I change the voice in the middle of a conversation?

Yes. OpenAI says changing the selected voice during a Voice conversation starts a new voice call in the same chat.

Does the voice I choose change my usage limit?

OpenAI sets Live limits by plan, not by voice, and measures them over a rolling 24-hour period. Plus and Go get 3 hours, and Pro at $100 a month gets 15 hours.

Key Takeaways

  • Change your voice in Settings, then Voice, then Voice again.

  • OpenAI lists nine voices: Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce and Vale.

  • Live, Advanced and Standard are separate options, and only Advanced supports video and screen sharing on mobile.

  • Changing the voice mid-call starts a new voice call in the same chat.

  • Live limits depend on your plan, from 3 hours on Plus and Go to 15 hours on Pro at $100 a month.

Conclusion

Changing the ChatGPT voice is a short job once you know where the setting sits. Pick a voice in Settings, check which of Live, Advanced and Standard you are using, and remember that your options depend on your plan and region. New to ChatGPT altogether? Start with our beginner's guide to ChatGPT.
