ChatGPT Limits by Plan: Free, Go, Plus, Pro and Business (2026)

ChatGPT limits depend on your plan. Free and Go give unlimited everyday text chats, Free allows 3 file uploads a day, and Go, Plus and Pro allow up to 80 uploads every 3 hours. OpenAI publishes no fixed message count for most plans, so this page says not published instead. Checked 21 October 2026.
Last checked: 21 October 2026. Next check due: 21 November 2026. OpenAI changes limits often, so treat this page as a dated snapshot.
If ChatGPT has just told you that you have reached a limit, you probably want to know what the cap is and when it resets. OpenAI publishes some limits as exact numbers and leaves others as "varies" or "limited". This page shows both, plan by plan, so you can see which is which. If ChatGPT is not responding at all, rather than limiting you, check whether ChatGPT is down.
Every figure comes from an OpenAI help page or the OpenAI pricing page, and each table is marked with the date it was checked. Where OpenAI gives no number, the table says "not published". Figures from third-party sites are left out on purpose, because many of them copy old numbers.
If you are choosing a plan rather than checking a cap, start with our ChatGPT plans compared guide. For prices in pounds, see How Much Does ChatGPT Cost in the UK?. For what the cheaper tier includes, see What Is ChatGPT Go?. For the wider question of what costs nothing, read Is ChatGPT Free?

How Many Messages Can You Send on Each ChatGPT Plan?
For everyday text chats the answer is simple. OpenAI says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, and the Go help page says the same for Go. The pricing page lists everyday text chats as unlimited for Plus and Pro too, with the note that use must be reasonable. The limits start to bite on thinking models, Pro models and tools.
OpenAI does not publish a message count per hour or per day for Plus. Its Plus help page says only that subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand. So the Plus row says "not published" and not a number. You may still see older guides quoting "80 messages every 3 hours". That figure is not on the current OpenAI pages checked for this guide.

What Are the ChatGPT File Upload Limits?
File limits are where OpenAI is most specific, so this is the most reliable part of the page. According to the upload help page, the size limits are the same whichever plan you use. What changes is how many files you can send. For a hands-on walkthrough, see Can ChatGPT Read PDFs? and Can ChatGPT Upload and Transcribe Audio Files?.
Table 2: file upload limits by plan (checked 21 October 2026)
Limit | Free | Go | Plus | Pro | Business |

Storage (A, G) | Library: 500 MB. Shared upload cap not stated for Free | 25 GB per user | 25 GB per user | 25 GB per user | 25 GB per user, 100 GB per organisation |
The upload help page gives one rate for everyone except Free, so Go, Plus and Pro share the same figure here. OpenAI says it may lower upload limits during peak hours. ChatGPT does not show how much of your rolling upload allowance you have used, and failed upload attempts can sometimes count towards it.
How Many Images, Voice Chats and Deep Research Tasks Do You Get?
These tools have their own allowances, separate from your chat limit. OpenAI is clear about the shape of them and quiet about the numbers. For images, deep research and data analysis it publishes words such as limited, more and expanded, not counts. Where a figure exists, as with Voice, it is in the table. For a closer look at the tools themselves, see Can ChatGPT Create Images?.
Table 3: images, voice and research limits by plan (checked 21 October 2026)
Limit | Free | Go | Plus | Pro | Business |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Image creation (J) | Limited. No figure published | More than Free. No figure published | Expanded. No figure published | Unlimited and faster, subject to abuse guardrails | Not published |
Voice chats (H) | Limited access. OpenAI says limits may change | 3 hours in a rolling 24 hours | 3 hours in a rolling 24 hours | Pro 100: 15 hours in 24 hours. Pro 200: unlimited, subject to guardrails. Pro 500: not published | Standard: 3 hours. Premium: 15 hours. Extra use costs 1.25 credits a minute |
Deep research (I, J) | Limited. No figure published | Limited. No figure published | Expanded. No figure published | Maximum. No figure published | Not published |
Data analysis (A, B) | Limited. No figure published | Higher than Free. No figure published | Included. No figure published | Included. No figure published | Not published |
Voice with video (J) | Not included | Included | Included | Included | Not published |
ChatGPT Work (J, F) | Limited, desktop app only | Limited, desktop app only | Desktop, web and mobile. Allowance not published | Desktop, web and mobile. Allowance not published | Premium seats include more than Standard. Not published as a message count |
The pricing page lists Voice as unlimited for Pro, with a guardrails note. The Voice help page is more specific and gives different hours for each Pro tier, so the table follows the help page. OpenAI notes that deep research on a plan with a fixed monthly allowance resets every 30 days from your first use, and your in-product counter shows how many tasks remain.
The old ChatGPT agent mode, which used to have 40 messages a month on Plus and 400 on Pro, is no longer available according to OpenAI's agent help page, which points users to ChatGPT Work. That means older guides quoting agent limits are out of date. Work usage depends on the model and the size of the task, so OpenAI does not give one message count for it.

Is There a ChatGPT Character Limit?
There is no fixed character count published for a single message. What OpenAI publishes is the context window, which is the total space ChatGPT can hold in one conversation, and an approximate amount you can paste in at once. Both depend on the plan and the model.
OpenAI explains that the space for your own input is smaller than the total window, because system instructions, memories and internal processing use part of it. The page counts are approximate and can change with the features in use. If ChatGPT says a conversation has reached its maximum length, you have used up the window, and starting a new chat is the fix.
Table 4: context windows by plan (checked 21 October 2026)
Limit | Free | Go | Plus | Pro | Business |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Instant model, total context window (J) | 27K | 54K | 54K | 128K | Not published |
Instant model, most you can type or paste (J) | About 12 pages of text | About 40 pages of text | About 40 pages of text | About 250 pages of text | Not published |
Reasoning model, total context window (J) | Varies | 256K | 256K | 400K | Not published |
Reasoning model, most you can type or paste (J) | Varies | About 320 pages of text | About 320 pages of text | About 680 pages of text | Not published |
Fixed character limit per message | Not published | Not published | Not published | Not published | Not published |
K means thousands of tokens, which are small chunks of text. The page figures are OpenAI's own approximations of how much text fits.
What Are the ChatGPT Business Limits?
ChatGPT Business has two seat types, Standard and Premium. OpenAI does not show a price on its Business page and lists plans for two or more users, so check the pricing page for the current figure. The limits that are published concern Pro models and the Work and Codex tools.
Pro model messages in Chat: Standard seats include 15 a month, shared across GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Premium seats include 50 a week. Switching models does not add to the shared allowance.
Work and Codex, Standard seats: OpenAI estimates local messages per 5-hour window. GPT-6 Astra is 5 to 45, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Sol are 15 to 150, GPT-5.6 Sol is 10 to 100, GPT-5.6 Terra is 25 to 200 and GPT-5.6 Luna is 250 to 2,000.
Work and Codex, Premium seats: Five times the included usage of Standard, with no 5-hour limit.
Everyday Instant chat: Virtually unlimited, subject to safeguards. This does not make reasoning, Pro models, Work or Codex unlimited.
OpenAI also says a fixed number of messages is not a reliable measure of Work and Codex usage, because longer tasks use more of the allowance. Treat those estimates as a guide, not a promise.
What Should You Do When You Hit a ChatGPT Limit?
A limit does not mean your account is restricted, and your subscription is not affected. Try these steps in order.
Read the notice. ChatGPT shows the reset time when it has one, and for uploads it may show a retry time.
Switch to another available model, or wait until the allowance resets.
Check you are signed in to the account that holds your subscription.
For upload errors, check Settings, then Storage, because Library storage is a separate cap from the upload rate.
If you are on Free and hit a limit often, compare plans. OpenAI says Free rate limits reset when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business.
OpenAI Support cannot reset limits, so there is no point asking. Contact Support only if you believe usage was counted wrongly, or access has not returned after the stated reset time. To compare what each plan adds, see our ChatGPT plans compared guide, and if you are thinking of stopping a paid plan, read How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT Limits
What is the ChatGPT message limit on the free plan?
OpenAI says Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Separate limits apply to file uploads, image creation, voice, data analysis and other tools. OpenAI does not publish a fixed message count for the Free plan, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach a limit.
What is the ChatGPT file upload limit?
Documents and presentations can be up to 512 MB each, text and document files are capped at 2 million tokens each, spreadsheets at about 50 MB and images at 20 MB each. Free users can upload 3 files a day. Paid users can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours, and OpenAI may lower that at peak times.
Is there a ChatGPT character limit?
OpenAI does not publish a fixed character limit for a single message. It publishes context windows instead, such as 27K for the Free Instant model and 128K for Pro, plus approximate page counts for the most you can paste. The usable space is smaller than the total, because instructions and memory use some of it.
How many images can I create with ChatGPT?
OpenAI does not publish an image count for Free, Go or Plus. Free is described as limited, Go as more and Plus as expanded. The pricing page lists Pro image creation as unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails. ChatGPT shows a notice when you reach the image limit.
When do ChatGPT limits reset?
It depends on the limit. File uploads use a rolling 3 hour window, Voice in Chat uses a rolling 24 hours, and deep research on fixed monthly allowances resets every 30 days from your first use. For other limits, ChatGPT shows the reset time when it has one.
Does ChatGPT Plus have a message limit?
Everyday text chats are listed as unlimited for Plus, with reasonable use. OpenAI's Plus help page says subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand, and it gives no number. Thinking levels and Pro models have their own allowances, also unpublished for Plus.
Can OpenAI Support reset my ChatGPT limits?
No. OpenAI Support does not reset usage limits. It can investigate if you think usage was counted wrongly, or if access did not return after the stated reset time. Upgrading from Free to a paid plan does reset your Free rate limits.
Key Takeaways
Everyday text chats are unlimited on every personal plan, subject to reasonable use.
File size limits are the same on every plan. The number of uploads is what changes: 3 a day on Free, up to 80 every 3 hours on paid plans.
OpenAI publishes no fixed message count for most plans, so this page says not published instead of guessing.
There is no fixed character limit. The context window is what counts, and it grows with the plan.
Support cannot reset a limit. Waiting for the reset, switching model or upgrading are the real options.
Conclusion
ChatGPT limits are easiest to understand when you split them into three groups: chat, files and tools. Chat is generous, files have clear numbers, and tools such as images and deep research stay deliberately vague. Bookmark this page, because we recheck every figure each month. As OpenAI keeps changing what each plan includes, expect the numbers to move, and explore more ChatGPT guides on whatischatgpt.co.uk when they do.
