ChatGPT upgraded to GPT-6 on 7 October 2026, bringing a new feature called Intelligent UI. Instead of plain text, ChatGPT can now reply with interactive charts, comparisons, calculators, and diagrams built right inside the conversation. Free users get GPT-6 Luna; paid users get GPT-6 Sol; Pro reasoning users keep GPT-6 Astra.
GPT-6 and Intelligent UI in ChatGPT - interactive responses in the chat window, October 2026

What just changed in ChatGPT?

If you have opened ChatGPT this week, you may have noticed something different. Answers can now include charts, side-by-side comparisons, interactive calculators, and even small games, all appearing directly inside the chat window. No separate app, no extra steps.

This is the result of two changes OpenAI rolled out on 7 October 2026: a new AI model called GPT-6, and a new display system called Intelligent UI. Together they change how ChatGPT thinks and how it presents the answer.

This guide explains both changes in plain English, tells you which version you are getting on your current plan, and walks you through what to expect.

What is GPT-6?

GPT-6 is the latest family of AI models from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The number is simply a version label: GPT-4 came out in 2023, GPT-5 in 2025, and GPT-6 in 2026. Each new version is more capable than the last.

GPT-6 has one particularly useful new behaviour. It can start answering your question while it is still thinking. In earlier versions, ChatGPT would finish all its reasoning first, then show you the result. With GPT-6, the first lines of the answer can appear while the model is still working through the problem.

In practice this means you get something useful to read sooner, even for complex questions. Later parts of the answer can add to, or refine, what appeared first.

What is Intelligent UI?

Intelligent UI is a new display system that lets ChatGPT choose the best format for your answer, rather than always using plain text.

Until now, ChatGPT replied with paragraphs and the occasional table. With Intelligent UI, the response can include:

  • Side-by-side comparisons, useful for comparing products or plans

  • Interactive charts and diagrams

  • Calculators where you type in your own numbers and watch the totals update

  • Bill splitters, unit converters, and similar small tools

  • Simple games and quizzes

ChatGPT decides which format fits your question on its own. For simple questions, you still get a simple text answer. You do not need to turn anything on.

As a practical example: if you ask ChatGPT whether to keep your current phone contract or switch to a cheaper one, it might reply with a side-by-side comparison and a small calculator where you enter your monthly data usage and the savings update in real time.

Which GPT-6 model do you get on your plan?

GPT-6 is a family of models, not a single model. Which one you get depends on your ChatGPT subscription. Here is how OpenAI maps them, based on the 7 October 2026 release notes:

  • Free and Go plans: GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI describes Luna as the model for everyday conversations.

  • Plus, Business, and Enterprise plans: GPT-6 Sol. Sol offers stronger reasoning at a lower cost than Astra.

  • Pro plan (standard mode): GPT-6 Sol, with Intelligent UI included.

  • Pro plan (reasoning option): GPT-6 Astra. This is OpenAI's most powerful model and does not support Intelligent UI.

Intelligent UI is available from Instant through Extra High reasoning settings. The one exception is the Pro reasoning option, which uses GPT-6 Astra and returns plain text only.

Paid subscribers received the update on 7 October. Free and Go users followed from 8 October. Enterprise availability depends on your company's workspace settings. If your work account still looks the same, speak to your IT administrator, as they may have kept the old settings while reviewing the change.

How to use Intelligent UI

You do not have to do anything special. ChatGPT selects the format on its own. Some types of questions are more likely to produce a visual or interactive answer:

  1. Comparison questions: 'What is the difference between X and Y?' or 'Which is better, A or B?'

  2. Calculation questions: 'How much will I save if I switch energy tariffs?' or 'How long will it take to pay off this loan at this interest rate?'

  3. Structured data questions: 'Show me a breakdown of my monthly spending' or 'Compare these three laptops side by side'

  4. Step-by-step process questions: 'How do I set up a new broadband connection at home?'

For quick factual questions, ChatGPT will still return a simple text answer. The system matches the format to what is actually useful for your question.

On mobile, interactive elements appear inside the chat window and respond to taps. On desktop, you can fill in input fields, move sliders, and click through comparisons.

Audio uploads: another new feature this week

Alongside GPT-6, OpenAI also released audio uploads to ChatGPT on 6 October 2026. If you are on a paid plan, you can now attach an audio file to a conversation and ask ChatGPT to transcribe it, summarise it, or turn it into structured notes.

This is useful for:

  • Converting a recorded meeting into a summary or action list

  • Transcribing a voice note into text

  • Turning a lecture or interview recording into structured notes

To use it, attach a supported audio file to your conversation and describe what you want. OpenAI notes that transcripts may contain errors, and performance can vary across languages. Audio uploads are available to paid subscribers only.

This feature adds to ChatGPT's growing media capabilities. For a full look at what ChatGPT can do with images and visuals, see our guide at whatischatgpt.co.uk/post/can-chatgpt-create-images-everything-you-need-to-know

What about GPT-6.1 Astra?

You may have seen reports that OpenAI was planning to release GPT-6.1 Astra, a more powerful agentic model that can browse the web and use apps on your behalf. OpenAI confirmed on 29 September 2026 that this model will not be released as planned.

The reason given was safety. OpenAI's head of safety systems said the model did not meet the company's bar for staying within scope and communicating clearly with users about what it had done.

No new release date has been confirmed. The GPT-6 Astra model already available on the Pro reasoning option is unaffected by this decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPT-6 free in ChatGPT?

Yes. GPT-6 Luna is rolling out to free ChatGPT users from 8 October 2026. Free users do not get the same model as paid users, but they do get a GPT-6 model. Paid subscribers get GPT-6 Sol, which offers stronger reasoning.

Do I need to do anything to get GPT-6?

No. The update happens automatically. If you are on a paid plan, you should already have it. If you are on the free plan, it is rolling out from 8 October 2026. There is nothing to install or activate.

What does Intelligent UI mean for my privacy?

OpenAI has not announced any changes to its privacy policy alongside this update. The same data handling rules that applied to text conversations apply to interactive responses. You can review OpenAI's privacy policy at openai.com/policies/privacy-policy for full details.

Does Intelligent UI work on mobile?

Yes. Intelligent UI is available on the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android, as well as on the web version. Interactive elements are designed to work with touch input on mobile devices.

Can I turn Intelligent UI off?

OpenAI has not provided a setting to disable Intelligent UI for standard conversations. If you prefer plain text, you can ask ChatGPT to reply in text only within a specific conversation. The Pro reasoning option, which uses GPT-6 Astra, also does not use Intelligent UI.

What is the difference between GPT-6 Luna and GPT-6 Sol?

Both are part of the GPT-6 family. Luna is designed for everyday conversations and is available on free and Go plans. Sol offers stronger reasoning and is available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. OpenAI describes Sol as offering near-Astra performance at lower cost.

The bottom line

The GPT-6 and Intelligent UI launch on 7 October 2026 is the most significant change to ChatGPT's interface in years. Answers can now include interactive elements that were simply not possible before, and every plan tier now runs on a GPT-6 model.

You do not need to change how you use ChatGPT. The system adapts to your question. Comparison and calculation questions are now likely to produce something you can interact with rather than just read.
