How to Export ChatGPT Conversations and Download Your Data
If you want a personal copy of your ChatGPT history, use the account’s official data-export controls. The exact menu labels can change, so follow the options currently shown in your account and confirm the request through any verification steps required.
1. Find the data controls
Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose data you want to export. Open Settings and look for Data Controls or the current export/download option. If the menu has changed, consult the official OpenAI Help Centre rather than using an unfamiliar third-party export service.
2. Request an export
Choose the data-export option and follow the on-screen confirmation steps. You may need to verify the request. The export is not necessarily instant; check the account email and instructions supplied by OpenAI, including any expiry period for the download link.
3. Download and inspect the archive
When the export is ready, download the archive from the official link and save it to a secure location. Depending on the current export format, it may contain conversation data and other account information. Read the included files and documentation rather than assuming the contents are identical for every account.
4. Store the files securely
A conversation archive may contain personal, professional or sensitive information. Store it in a protected location, limit access and avoid uploading it to another service unless you understand that service’s privacy terms. Delete extra copies you no longer need.
5. Understand what export does not do
Downloading a copy does not delete the conversations from your ChatGPT account. If your goal is to remove data, use the account’s available deletion controls and review the relevant privacy guidance separately.
6. Troubleshooting export problems
Check that you are signed into the right account, inspect spam and junk folders, and follow the current instructions if the email does not arrive. If the download link has expired or the request fails, return to the official account controls or contact support.
