What Is ChatGPT Study Mode? A Complete Guide for 2026

ChatGPT Study Mode is a learning setting inside ChatGPT that explains ideas step by step and asks you questions instead of simply handing over an answer. It is free on every ChatGPT plan, works on the web, iOS and Android, and you switch it on by typing @study in a regular chat.
If you have ever asked ChatGPT for help with revision and received a polished answer you still did not understand, Study Mode is built for exactly that situation. It changes how the chatbot behaves in a conversation so that it teaches rather than tells. According to the 2026 Student Generative AI Survey from the Higher Education Policy Institute, 95 per cent of UK undergraduates now use AI in at least one way, and 94 per cent use it for assessed work.
This guide explains what Study Mode is, how to turn it on, what it can help with, and where its limits sit. Every feature below was checked against OpenAI's own help pages and launch announcement, current as of 22 October 2026.

What is ChatGPT Study Mode?
Study Mode is a learning experience inside ChatGPT, launched on 29 July 2025, that helps you build a deeper understanding of a topic instead of only receiving a finished answer. When it is switched on, ChatGPT can ask what you already know, where you got stuck and what you would try next. It can begin with a simple explanation and then add detail when you are ready, or quiz you one question at a time and explain anything you miss.
OpenAI says it built the feature with teachers, scientists and learning specialists, drawing on long-standing research into how people actually learn. The aim is active learning. You work through the material yourself, with ChatGPT prompting you along the way, rather than watching it produce a finished answer you simply copy out. Coverage at launch described it as a step towards responsible AI use in education rather than a shortcut around real learning.

How do you turn on ChatGPT Study Mode?
Study Mode only works inside a regular ChatGPT conversation, so start a new chat first. It is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.
On the web, type @study in the message box, or select the plus icon and search for Study, then choose it from the suggestions. You can also go straight to chatgpt.com/studymode and start from there.
On iOS and Android, select the plus icon to open the tools menu, then search for and select Study. Menu layouts vary between apps and versions, so use the search route if Study does not appear at once.
To turn it off, remove the Study token from the message box. Place the cursor next to it and press Backspace or Delete, or select the remove control if your app shows one. Selecting Study again from the menu may also switch it off on some layouts.
What can ChatGPT Study Mode help with?
OpenAI's help pages list the kinds of learning work Study Mode is built for:
Learning a new concept from the beginning
Working through homework or practice problems step by step
Preparing for a quiz, test or exam
Reviewing class notes, slides, readings or a syllabus
Creating practice questions or flashcard-style review
Understanding why an answer is correct or incorrect
Breaking a large topic into smaller sections
Study Mode is designed to help you learn the material itself. For anything that is graded, OpenAI is clear that you should follow the AI rules set by your school, university or employer. If you are unsure where the line sits, our guide to whether ChatGPT is safe for homework goes deeper.
How does Study Mode guide your learning?
Guided questions instead of quick answers
Instead of answering straight away, Study Mode asks what you already know, where you got stuck and what you would try next. You can ask it to slow down, use simpler language, give an analogy or go deeper into the detail.
Explanations in layers
Study Mode can begin with a plain explanation and then build up in layers, showing the links between ideas and keeping each step short enough to follow. If a section feels too dense, you can ask for a simpler version before moving on.
Checking what you have understood
It can ask open questions, give feedback on your answers and help you correct misunderstandings. You can ask to be quizzed one question at a time, wait for your reply, and then hear what to review next.
Can Study Mode use your notes and slides?
Yes. You can upload course materials such as class notes, a syllabus, a worksheet, slides, a textbook extract or a photo of a maths or science problem, and ChatGPT will refer to them while helping you study.
If ChatGPT misses something in an image or file you uploaded, OpenAI suggests three fixes. They are: upload a clearer version, paste the most important text into the chat, or say which page, section or question to focus on.
Does ChatGPT Study Mode work with Memory?
If memory is available and switched on, ChatGPT may use saved memories or past chats to personalise your study sessions. It can remember your learning goals, your preferred explanation style and the topics you have studied before. You can review these settings under Settings, then Personalization.
Study Mode still works when memory is off, but OpenAI says responses may be less personal.

Is ChatGPT Study Mode free to use?
Yes. OpenAI says Study Mode is available across ChatGPT plans globally on the web, iOS and Android, and it works with any model available on your plan. It follows the same plan, model and message limits as ordinary chats, so it does not add extra messages or bypass limits.
What about teen accounts and classrooms?
If a parent or guardian has linked a teen account and switched on Study hours, new chats may already start in Study Mode during the chosen study times. Some ChatGPT Edu workspaces can also require Study Mode for regular conversations. When a setting is managed for your account, OpenAI advises asking your parent or the workspace admin to change it.
Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Study Mode
Can Study Mode quiz me or create practice questions?
Yes. You can ask it to quiz you, create practice questions, explain what you missed, or build flashcard-style review. Some accounts and apps also show a separate Quizzes shortcut alongside Study Mode.
Why does Study Mode sometimes give a direct answer?
Study Mode is designed to guide you towards answers, but OpenAI is open that it may sometimes provide one directly. You can ask it to give hints, ask one question at a time, or quiz you before explaining the answer.
Does Study Mode replace a teacher or tutor?
No. OpenAI says plainly that it does not replace teachers, tutors, course materials or academic requirements. Treat it as a study aid, and follow the rules that apply to your class, school or organisation.
Does Study Mode change my message limits?
No. It uses the same plan, model and rate-limit rules as ordinary chats. It does not add messages, unlock unavailable models, or bypass rate limits.
Can I use Study Mode in a GPT or Project?
No. Study Mode only works inside regular conversations, not in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.
Where do I find the settings?
Memory settings sit under Settings, then Personalization. Study Mode itself is switched on per conversation, from the message box or the tools menu.
