ChatGPT Student Discount UK: Is There One in 2026?
ChatGPT student discount UK: OpenAI does not currently publish one. The 2026 Back to School offer of four free months of Plus is for students at eligible US institutions and closes on 31 October. UK students can use the free plan, a university ChatGPT Edu licence if their institution has one, or Go at £6.99 a month.
If you are a student in Britain and wondering whether OpenAI sells ChatGPT cheaper to people in education, the short answer is no, not at the moment. We checked OpenAI's Help Center on 22 October 2026, and the only student offer on it is aimed at students in the United States. This guide explains what that offer is, why UK students cannot use it, and the real ways to pay less or nothing.
In this guide
Is there a ChatGPT student discount in the UK?
There is no official one that we could find. OpenAI's Help Center lists a single student promotion for 2026, the ChatGPT Back to School offer, and its eligibility rule says it is for students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. Nothing on OpenAI's pages gives UK students a reduced price on Go, Plus or Pro.
That does not leave UK students empty-handed. A free plan, a low-cost Go plan and, at some universities, a free ChatGPT Edu licence all exist. The sections below cover each one and name the source. For a wider look at what each plan includes, see our ChatGPT plans compared guide.
What is the ChatGPT Back to School offer?
The 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including access to ChatGPT Work and other Plus features. OpenAI's offer page values it at $80, which is four months at $20. The terms on OpenAI's Help Center are:
Open to current full-time and part-time students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions, checked through SheerID.
Claim it by 31 October 2026. It can be redeemed once.
A valid payment method is needed to activate it, and the subscription renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.
Subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play are not supported while they remain store-billed.
If you cancel early, your Plus access runs to the end of the current billing period and any remaining free months are lost.
A UK student with an ac.uk email address cannot claim it, because the check is on the institution as well as the student. Trying to get round that check is a poor idea. OpenAI's promotions FAQ says it can revoke offers in cases of suspected misuse or fraud.
Does Student Beans have a ChatGPT student discount?
Student Beans, the UK student discount site, has a ChatGPT page. When we read it on 22 October 2026 the listing said "Join for free at ChatGPT with Student Beans for a limited time only", with the condition "When you sign up", and it stated no price cut on any paid plan. It reads as a general listing rather than a published discount on Go or Plus.
If you see an offer there, or in a social media post, read the terms on OpenAI's own page before you add a payment card. OpenAI's promotions and free trial FAQ says promo and referral codes are single-use, cannot be stacked, and that a trial can renew as a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends.
How can UK students pay less for ChatGPT?
Start with the plan that costs nothing and move up only when a limit gets in your way. This table sets out the realistic options for a UK student, using OpenAI's pages and the UK App Store prices from our UK price guide.
Option | What it costs | Who it suits |
ChatGPT Free | £0 | Everyday study questions, summaries and drafting help |
ChatGPT Go | $8 a month on OpenAI's site, £6.99 a month on the UK App Store (checked 21 October 2026) | Students who hit Free limits on images, file uploads or data analysis |
ChatGPT Plus | $20 a month, £19.99 a month on the UK App Store (checked 21 October 2026) | Heavy users who want ChatGPT Work and the full Plus feature set |
Back to School offer | Four free months of Plus, then $20 a month | Students at eligible U.S. institutions only, claim by 31 October 2026 |
ChatGPT Edu through your university | Free to you if your institution licences it | Students at participating universities, such as Oxford |
Promo codes and invites | Varies by campaign, often renews at full price | Anyone who is sent a genuine OpenAI or partner code |
OpenAI bills in US dollars on its own site, so the pound figure depends on where you subscribe. The App Store price is a UK figure, but a subscription billed through the App Store cannot use the student offer, which is one more reason UK students should compare before they pay. Our Go guide covers what the cheaper plan includes, and our limits by plan page shows where the Free plan runs out.
If you are weighing Plus, our Is ChatGPT Plus worth it? verdict sets out who gains from it and who does not. Many students find Free or Go is enough for notes, essay planning and revision questions.
Does ChatGPT Edu give UK students free access?
ChatGPT Edu is a version of ChatGPT sold to institutions, not to individual students. OpenAI's Help Center article on ChatGPT Edu describes it as made for schools that want to deploy AI more broadly to students and their campus communities, with substantially higher message limits than ChatGPT Free and admin controls such as single sign-on. You cannot buy it yourself.
Some UK universities have licences. The BBC reported on 21 September 2025 that the University of Oxford had become the first UK institution of its kind to offer ChatGPT Edu to all its students and staff, after a pilot involving about 750 people. Check your university's IT or library pages to see whether yours has one. If it does, it is usually the best deal because it costs you nothing.
Our advice: an Edu account sits in a workspace your institution controls, so use it for coursework and keep personal chats somewhere else.
How many UK students already use AI tools?
The Higher Education Policy Institute's Student Generative AI Survey 2026 surveyed 1,054 full-time UK undergraduates through Savanta in December 2025. It found that 95% use AI in at least one way and 94% use generative AI to help with assessed work. Some 12% include AI-generated text directly in assessed work, up from 8% in 2025, and 38% say their institution provides them with AI tools.
These figures cover AI in general, not ChatGPT alone, and they are self-reported. They show why so many students look for ways to pay less, and they show that provision differs between universities. Check your course's AI policy before using ChatGPT on assessed work. Our guides on whether schools can detect ChatGPT and using ChatGPT for study go through the rules and good habits.
How do you avoid paying more than you meant to?
Read the end date. OpenAI says a free trial or promotional subscription renews as a paid plan using your payment method unless you cancel before it ends.
Set a reminder. Put a note in your calendar a few days before the free period finishes.
Check where you are billed. A subscription through the App Store or Google Play is managed there, and the student offer does not support it.
Use genuine codes only. OpenAI's Go promotions page says it does not reissue promo codes, so a code from a stranger that fails is not something OpenAI will replace.
Know how to cancel. Our guide on how to cancel your ChatGPT subscription walks through it for each billing route.
If you are unsure whether the free plan is enough, read our Is ChatGPT free? explainer first. It is cheaper to find out what Free covers than to pay for a month you did not need.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a ChatGPT student discount in the UK?
Not that OpenAI publishes. We checked OpenAI's Help Center on 22 October 2026 and found one student promotion, the Back to School offer, which is limited to students at eligible U.S. institutions. UK students can still use the free plan, a ChatGPT Edu licence through a participating university, or the low-cost Go plan.
Can UK students claim the ChatGPT Back to School offer?
No. OpenAI's terms say the offer is for current full-time and part-time students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions, verified through SheerID, and it must be claimed by 31 October 2026. A UK university email address does not change that.
Does Student Beans give a ChatGPT student discount?
Student Beans has a ChatGPT page, but when we read it on 22 October 2026 it stated no price cut on a paid plan, only a general 'join for free' listing with the condition 'when you sign up'. Check the terms on OpenAI's own pages before adding a payment card to anything.
Is ChatGPT Plus free for students with a university email address?
No. Nothing on OpenAI's pages says a UK university email on its own unlocks Plus or a discount. Free access comes through an institution that licences ChatGPT Edu, which the institution sets up, not the individual student.
What is the cheapest paid ChatGPT plan for a UK student?
Go. OpenAI lists it at $8 a month, and the UK App Store price we checked on 21 October 2026 was £6.99 a month. It is billed monthly and can be cancelled at any time. OpenAI also says it may start testing ads in Go, so check the current terms.
Will OpenAI bring a student discount to the UK?
OpenAI has not said so on its Help Center. Student offers have been run as short campaigns with their own eligibility rules, so the safest approach is to use the free plan or your university's licence now and check OpenAI's pages again if you plan to upgrade.

The bottom line on a ChatGPT student discount in the UK
For now, a ChatGPT student discount in the UK does not exist as an official OpenAI offer. The best value is the free plan, then your university's licence if it has one, then Go if you need more. If OpenAI opens a UK student offer, its Help Center is where it will appear first, and we will update this page when it does.
