Can you use ChatGPT on WhatsApp in the UK?
Not officially, as far as OpenAI's published pages go. OpenAI's help article on 1-800-ChatGPT says ChatGPT is available again on WhatsApp in the European Economic Area. Its ChatGPT in WhatsApp page says it is available for users in the EEA and Switzerland. The United Kingdom left the EU in 2020, is not part of the EEA, and is not named on either page.
OpenAI also says availability is based on the country code associated with your WhatsApp number, and that it may roll out gradually. In plain terms, a UK number starting +44 is not currently listed. That could change, so check OpenAI's help page before you assume. We have not found any OpenAI announcement of a UK date.

Where a country is not listed, that means OpenAI has not published it as available. It does not mean OpenAI has said it will never come. Treat the table as a snapshot and check the help article for updates.
Why did ChatGPT leave WhatsApp, and why is it back?
WhatsApp is owned by Meta, which changed its rules for businesses using the WhatsApp platform. In an announcement on 21 October 2025, OpenAI said that because of that policy and terms change ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026. It asked people to link a ChatGPT account so their history could carry on in the app.
According to The Decoder, the European Commission ordered interim measures against Meta in June 2026 that forced it to let rival AI assistants back on, and OpenAI switched ChatGPT back on across the EEA on 13 July 2026. That is a European decision, which fits with the return following the EEA rather than the UK. OpenAI has not said why the UK is missing.
How do you start a chat on WhatsApp?
These steps are for people whose WhatsApp number is registered in the EEA or Switzerland. If your number is a UK one, the steps will not apply to you yet.
Add the verified 1-800-CHATGPT contact in WhatsApp. OpenAI's help page gives the number as +1-800-242-8478.

Send a message, a voice note or a photo and wait a few seconds for the reply.

What can ChatGPT on WhatsApp do?
OpenAI's feature page lists sending messages, creating images, chatting about images, sending voice notes and getting up to date information. The Decoder reported that text prompts, image uploads, voice messages and image generation all worked in many languages when the service returned in July 2026.
