ChatGPT something went wrong is a general error that usually points to a temporary server problem or an issue on your own device. Refresh the page, check status.openai.com, clear your cache, then try a private window with extensions, VPNs and secure DNS tools switched off. If it keeps happening on every device, contact OpenAI support.

What does "Something went wrong" mean in ChatGPT?

The ChatGPT "Something went wrong" message is OpenAI's catch-all error. According to OpenAI's Help Center, it can point to a temporary server issue or to a problem with your own setup, so the message alone does not tell you which. The good news is that most causes are quick to rule out, and you can work through them in a few minutes.

This guide covers the fixes OpenAI itself recommends, what to do when ChatGPT will not load or sits on a blank screen, and how to tell whether the fault is yours or OpenAI's. If you want the wider picture of outages first, our guide to whether ChatGPT is down lists the common reasons, and our page on how to check OpenAI status explains the official dashboard.

The scale matters too. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly users in February 2026 (see our ChatGPT statistics reference), so when an error appears it is rarely just you, and it is rarely something only you can fix. New to the tool? Start with what ChatGPT is.

Why is ChatGPT not loading or showing an error?

OpenAI's help article names several everyday causes. Knowing them helps you pick the right fix instead of trying everything at once.

  • A temporary server issue at OpenAI. You cannot fix this yourself, but you can confirm it on the OpenAI status page.

  • A browser extension or content blocker that interferes with the page. OpenAI links this to the "There was a problem preparing your chat" message.

  • A VPN, proxy or secure DNS tool that stops your device from making a stable connection to OpenAI's servers.

  • A long or stuck conversation. OpenAI suggests starting a new chat when a conversation has many turns.

  • An unreliable network, which is why switching to another network or device is on OpenAI's list.

If ChatGPT feels slow rather than broken, our guide on why ChatGPT is so slow covers that case, and our wider why ChatGPT is not working guide covers other faults.

How do you fix "Something went wrong" in ChatGPT?

These are the steps OpenAI's Help Center lists for the general "Something went wrong" error, in the order it gives them, plus a final step for trying another browser or device.

  1. Refresh the page or start a new chat.

  2. Check status.openai.com for known outages.

  3. Clear your browser cache and cookies.

  4. Open ChatGPT in an incognito or private browsing window.

  5. Disable browser extensions, especially privacy or security tools.

  6. Turn off VPNs or secure DNS tools such as Web Protect.

  7. Switch to a different network if possible.

  8. Try a different browser or device.

A sensible habit is to do steps 1 and 2 first, because they take seconds and tell you whether the fault is on OpenAI's side. Only then move on to settings, one change at a time, so you know which one worked.

Which error message needs which fix?

ChatGPT shows more than one error, and each has a slightly different first step. This table summarises OpenAI's guidance for the most common ones. We read the help article on 22 October 2026, and OpenAI updates it, so treat the article itself as the final word.

Message

What OpenAI suggests first

"Something went wrong."

Refresh or start a new chat, then check status.openai.com for outages.

"A network error occurred." or a websocket error

Turn off VPNs and proxies, try another browser or network, or switch device.

"We detect suspicious activity."

Disable VPNs or proxies, use a private window, and make sure your account is not shared.

"There was a problem preparing your chat."

Disable extensions that block scripts, then try incognito or a different browser.

"There was an error generating a response."

Click Regenerate once, restart the browser or device, then try another network.

"Download failed" or "File Not Found"

Use a recently generated file, as they expire quickly, and keep files under the 512 MB limit.

"Phone number required" in the Windows or macOS app

Add a mobile number from a supported country or region and complete verification.

Notice how often VPNs, proxies and extensions appear. If you use any of them, they are the first thing to test after the refresh and status checks.

What if ChatGPT is stuck loading or shows a blank screen?

Sometimes ChatGPT shows no error at all. The page stays blank, the spinner never stops, or the reply hangs on "Thinking". OpenAI has separate guidance for these cases.

  • Hard refresh the page with Cmd or Ctrl plus Shift plus R, or force reload the desktop app.

  • Sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in.

  • Clear site data or cookies for chat.openai.com.

  • Disable extensions or content blockers that may interfere with the page.

  • Open ChatGPT in a private window, a fresh browser profile or a different browser.

  • For a reply that hangs, wait 30 to 60 seconds, then click Stop generating and Regenerate, or start a new chat and resend your prompt.

If you use the app rather than the website, check our ChatGPT desktop app guide for how it differs, because force reloading the app is part of OpenAI's advice for a frozen screen.

Is it ChatGPT or your connection?

The OpenAI status page is the fastest way to find out. When we read it on 22 October 2026 it said "We're fully operational" and reported no known issues. For the July to October 2026 period it showed 99.70% uptime across the 16 ChatGPT components, with Conversations at 99.95% and Login at 99.93%. OpenAI notes these are aggregate figures across all tiers, models and error types, so your own experience may differ.

If the page shows an incident, the best fix is to wait and check back. If it is all green, here is a simple way to narrow things down. This is our suggestion rather than an OpenAI rule.

  • It works in a private window but not your normal one: the cause is likely an extension or stored data.

  • It works on mobile data but not your home Wi-Fi: the cause is likely your network, router or a DNS setting.

  • It fails everywhere and the status page shows an incident: the cause is on OpenAI's side, so wait.

When should you contact OpenAI support?

Contact support when the problem continues across browsers, devices and networks. OpenAI asks you to gather a few things first, which helps them diagnose the fault faster. The route is described in its article on how to contact support.

  • A HAR file recorded while you reproduce the error.

  • Browser console errors with timestamps.

  • The model you were using.

  • The conversation URL or ID.

Your conversation history stays in your account, so signing out and back in during troubleshooting should not remove your chats.

How can you stop it happening again?

You cannot prevent every outage, but a few habits cut down on avoidable errors. These are general tips, not OpenAI promises.

  • Start a new chat when you change topic, rather than keeping one very long conversation.

  • Review your browser extensions now and then, and remove any you do not recognise.

  • Check the status page before spending time on settings.

  • Copy a long, important prompt somewhere safe before you send it.

One more thing. If a message talks about a limit rather than saying something went wrong, that is a usage cap rather than a fault. Our guide to ChatGPT limits by plan explains the caps.

ChatGPT something went wrong: FAQ

Why does ChatGPT keep saying something went wrong?

It is a general error. OpenAI says it may indicate a temporary server issue or a problem with your local setup. If it repeats, work through the checks: status page, cache, private window, extensions, VPN and network.

Is ChatGPT something went wrong my fault or OpenAI's?

It can be either. Check status.openai.com first. If there is no incident, test a private window and a different network. If it works there, the cause is on your side.

Does clearing my cache delete my ChatGPT chats?

No. Your conversations are saved to your account, not to your browser cache. Clearing cookies may sign you out, so you may need to log in again.

Why is ChatGPT not loading and showing a blank screen?

A blank screen is often caused by an extension, a content blocker or a VPN. OpenAI suggests a hard refresh, signing out and in, clearing site data and trying a private window or another browser.

Should I turn off my VPN to use ChatGPT?

Turn it off for a test. OpenAI's help article lists VPNs, proxies and secure DNS tools as common triggers for several error messages. You can switch it back on afterwards.

How long does a ChatGPT error last?

OpenAI does not publish a typical length. A single failed reply often clears when you regenerate. A wider outage appears on the status page, which is the place to watch for updates.

Key Takeaways

  • "Something went wrong" is a general error, so check the status page before changing settings.

  • VPNs, proxies, secure DNS tools and extensions are the most common causes on your side.

  • A private window and a different network are the quickest ways to tell where the fault is.

  • For a blank screen, hard refresh, sign out and in, and clear site data for chat.openai.com.

  • If nothing works on any device, gather a HAR file and console errors, then contact OpenAI support.

In short, most ChatGPT errors clear with a refresh, a status check and a quick look at your VPN and extensions. As ChatGPT adds more features and more users, expect OpenAI to keep refining how it reports and explains faults. Explore more ChatGPT guides on whatischatgpt.co.uk.
