ChatGPT Voice Not Working? 10 Fixes for Microphone and Audio Problems

ChatGPT voice not working? The quickest way to find the cause is to separate three different problems: ChatGPT cannot hear you, you cannot hear ChatGPT, or Voice will not start or stay connected. Each points to a different setting. This guide works through the checks in a sensible order, starting with simple fixes before moving to app, browser, network and account issues.
Quick answer: check OpenAI’s service status, make sure the microphone is allowed for the ChatGPT app or browser, select the correct input and output devices, and close any other active Voice conversation. If the problem affects only one device, focus on that device’s permissions or audio settings. If it affects several devices at once, check for a service or account issue.
ChatGPT voice not working? Start with these checks
Before changing settings, note exactly what happens when you tap the Voice icon. Does it fail to open, show a connection message, open but not hear your speech, or hear you but produce no sound? That small distinction can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.
Check the OpenAI service status page for an active ChatGPT or Voice incident. If a service issue is listed, wait for it to clear before changing device settings.
End any other Voice conversation that may still be open in another browser tab, app window or device. OpenAI says only one Voice conversation can run at a time.
Try a short test in a quiet room. Say one simple sentence, then pause and listen for a reply.
If you are using the web version, test in a second supported browser. If you are using the mobile app, try the web version as a comparison.
Keep the app or browser open while testing, and make sure the device is connected to the internet.
Use the official OpenAI status page rather than relying on social posts or third-party outage claims. A green status page does not prove that every account or region is unaffected, but it is a sensible first check.
Allow microphone access on your phone or computer
If ChatGPT opens Voice but does not respond to your speech, microphone permission is one of the first things to check. The permission may have been denied accidentally, changed after an operating-system update, or blocked at browser level. Allow access only for the official ChatGPT app or the browser you use to visit ChatGPT.
On iPhone or iPad
Open Settings, choose Privacy & Security, then Microphone. Find ChatGPT in the list and switch access on. If ChatGPT is not listed, open the app and start a Voice conversation so iOS can request permission. When the prompt appears, tap Allow. You can switch microphone access off again at any time in the same settings screen.
Apple explains how to review microphone access in its iPhone hardware-permission guide. Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.
On Android
Open Settings, tap Apps, choose ChatGPT, then Permissions and Microphone. Select Allow only while using the app or Ask every time, depending on how you prefer to manage access. On supported Android versions, also check that the phone-wide microphone control has not been switched off in Quick Settings. Android menus vary between manufacturers, so use Settings search if the labels differ.
Google’s Android app-permissions instructions explain how to change microphone access for an individual app.
In a web browser
On ChatGPT.com, select the site-information or permissions icon beside the address bar and check that Microphone is set to Allow. If it is blocked, change the permission and reload the page. In Chrome or Edge, you can also open the browser’s site settings and review the microphone permission for chatgpt.com. In Safari or Firefox, use the site settings or privacy controls for the current website.
If the browser never asks for permission, check whether you previously selected Block. Remove the blocked setting for ChatGPT, reload the page and try the Voice icon again. A browser permission and the computer’s operating-system permission are separate: both may need to allow access.
On Mac or Windows
On a Mac, open Apple menu, System Settings, Privacy & Security, then Microphone. Enable access for the ChatGPT app or the browser you use. On Windows 11, open Start, Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone; if you use a desktop browser, check the setting for desktop apps as well.
See Apple’s Mac microphone controls and Microsoft’s Windows microphone-permission guide for the current steps.

The illustration above shows the kind of permission controls to look for; it is not a screenshot of a particular phone or browser version. Once access is allowed, return to ChatGPT and start a fresh Voice conversation rather than repeatedly pressing the button in an old session.
Check that the correct microphone is selected and not muted
Permission alone does not guarantee that ChatGPT is listening to the microphone you expect. A laptop may use its built-in microphone while a headset is connected, or a video-call app may have changed the default input device. Check the operating system’s sound settings and select the microphone you actually want to use.
Then check the physical mute switch on a headset, the mute button on the cable, and the microphone control inside the Voice conversation. If the input meter in your computer’s sound settings does not move when you speak, the problem may be with the microphone, its connection or the operating system rather than ChatGPT.
For a quick comparison, unplug the headset and test the built-in microphone. If the built-in microphone works, reconnect the headset and select it explicitly as the input device. If neither works in other apps, troubleshoot the device before changing ChatGPT settings.
If you can hear ChatGPT but there is no sound
When ChatGPT appears to answer but you hear nothing, the microphone may be working correctly. The problem may be the output device or volume. Check the following:
Raise the device volume and make sure the system is not muted.
Open the sound settings and choose the intended speaker, headphones or Bluetooth device as the output.
Check the headset’s own volume controls and reconnect Bluetooth headphones if necessary.
Close other apps that may have taken control of the audio device, then test again.
If you are using a browser, check that the tab or site has not been muted.
Try playing a short video or system sound outside ChatGPT. If other audio is also silent, fix the device’s output first. If other apps play sound normally but ChatGPT does not, reload ChatGPT or start a new Voice conversation.
Fix connection errors and Voice conversations that keep stopping
A Voice conversation uses a live network connection, so a connection that is adequate for ordinary text messages may still be unreliable for real-time audio. If Voice gets stuck connecting, drops out or repeatedly asks you to retry, test the network before reinstalling anything.
Switch once between Wi-Fi and mobile data, if available. This helps show whether the problem is tied to one network.
Move closer to the router or pause large downloads and video streams while testing.
If you use a VPN, proxy or managed work network, try a normal connection if your organisation’s rules allow it. Do not use a workaround to bypass account or regional restrictions.
Temporarily test without browser extensions that block scripts, microphone access or network requests. Re-enable them afterwards, one at a time, to identify the cause.
If the connection fails on several devices and networks, check OpenAI’s status page again and wait before repeatedly retrying.
Do not assume every connection error means your account is blocked. A temporary network problem, a service incident, a browser extension or a device permission can produce similar symptoms. Note the exact error message and when it occurs; that information is more useful than trying many unrelated fixes at once.
Update the app, check Voice settings and review usage limits
Update and restart
Install the latest official ChatGPT app update from the Apple App Store or Google Play. If you use ChatGPT in a browser, update the browser and reload the site. Close and reopen the app or browser after changing permissions. If a problem began immediately after an update, note the app and operating-system versions before contacting support.
Check which Voice option is selected
Open ChatGPT Settings and look under Voice. Depending on your account, workspace, region and app version, you may see Live, Advanced or Standard. These are different Voice experiences, and not every option is available to every user. If a specific feature such as video or screen sharing is missing, check the mode rather than assuming the microphone is broken. OpenAI’s current help page says Live does not support video or screen sharing; eligible mobile subscribers can use Advanced for those capabilities.
For a plain-English explanation of the available modes, see our guide to ChatGPT Voice Mode. If you only want to change the sound of the assistant, our guide to changing ChatGPT’s voice covers the voice choices.
Check usage and workspace controls
Voice access and usage limits can depend on the plan. OpenAI says ChatGPT will notify you when you reach a Voice limit. In eligible Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspaces, a workspace owner can disable Voice. If the Voice control is missing only in that workspace, ask the administrator whether Voice is enabled before changing personal device settings.
Make sure another Voice session is not running
OpenAI’s current Voice documentation says you can have one Voice conversation at a time. End an existing conversation on another device or browser tab, close duplicate ChatGPT windows, then start a new session. This is particularly worth checking if Voice appears to start and then immediately refuses to connect.
Reduce interruptions and improve speech recognition
If ChatGPT hears you but misunderstands words, cuts in too early or stops speaking, the microphone may be functioning. The issue may be background noise, several people speaking, a long pause or an incorrect language setting. Move to a quieter room, speak at a normal pace and test with one short sentence.
Open Settings, then Voice, and check the language setting if ChatGPT repeatedly recognises the wrong language. Choose the language you speak most often. OpenAI also recommends headphones or a quieter environment when Voice interrupts or struggles with overlapping speech. On supported iPhones, Voice Isolation can help reduce background noise during a call.
If you can hear the assistant but it stops part-way through a long conversation, the session may have reached a usage or context limit. OpenAI says a Voice conversation can end when a usage limit, maximum session length or context limit is reached. You can continue by typing or start another Voice conversation.
Use this simple test to isolate the fault
When the usual checks do not identify the problem, change one thing at a time. The aim is to find out whether the issue follows your account, your device, your browser or your network.
Test ChatGPT Voice on the same device in a different browser.
Test the official ChatGPT mobile app if you were using the web version, or test the web version if you were using the app.
Try the same microphone in another app that records or transmits audio.
Try a different network if one is available.
Write down which combinations work and which fail.
For example, if Voice works in the mobile app but not in Chrome on the same phone, focus on Chrome’s site permission or browser settings. If it fails in every app that uses the microphone, investigate the phone or headset. If it fails across devices while the status page reports an incident, waiting is more sensible than resetting everything.
When to contact OpenAI Support
Contact OpenAI Support if Voice still fails after you have checked permissions, tested another input device, updated the app or browser, and ruled out a local network problem. Use the Help Centre support route and include the exact error message, the date and time, your device and operating-system version, the ChatGPT app or browser version, and the steps that reproduce the problem.
Do not send passwords, one-time sign-in codes or private recordings in a support request. If you include a screenshot, remove personal information first. If Voice works on one device but not another, say so; that helps narrow down whether the issue is device-specific.
Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT voice not working
Why is ChatGPT not hearing my voice?
The most common checks are microphone permission, the selected input device, a physical mute switch and the microphone control inside the Voice conversation. Test the microphone in another app to see whether the fault is specific to ChatGPT.
Why can I hear ChatGPT but it cannot hear me?
That usually points to the input side: the wrong microphone may be selected, access may be blocked, or the headset may be muted. Check both the device permission and the browser or app permission.
Why does ChatGPT Voice keep saying it is connecting?
Check OpenAI’s status page, end any other Voice session, then test a different network or browser. A connection message does not by itself prove that your account has a problem.
Does ChatGPT need microphone permission?
Yes. OpenAI’s instructions say to allow microphone access when prompted in the mobile app or browser. You can review or revoke that permission in your device or browser settings.
Can I use ChatGPT Voice in a browser?
Yes. OpenAI documents Voice on the web: open ChatGPT.com, select the Voice icon and allow the browser to use the microphone when asked. The feature and available modes can vary by account and workspace.
Can I have two ChatGPT Voice conversations open at once?
No. OpenAI’s current Voice help page says only one Voice conversation can run at a time. End the other session before starting a new one.
Why does ChatGPT Voice stop after working for a while?
A session can end when you reach a usage limit, maximum session length or context limit. ChatGPT may show a notice. You can continue in text or start a new Voice conversation.
The bottom line
Most ChatGPT Voice problems can be narrowed down by checking service status, microphone permission, the selected input and output devices, the network and active Voice sessions. Start with the symptom you can see, change one setting at a time and test again. If the fault follows one device, focus on that device; if it follows your account across devices, contact OpenAI Support with the details.
