AI prompts for job seekers work best when you give ChatGPT your real facts and ask it to organise, draft and practise, not to invent. This page gives you 30 free prompts, a 30-day job search plan and an application tracker in one printable PDF, plus sample prompts to copy and honest rules for using AI in applications.

Looking for work is part admin and part nerves. You have to research employers, write to people you have never met, keep track of dates and still sound like yourself. ChatGPT can take some of that load, as long as you stay in charge of the facts.

This guide shows real sample prompts, how the application tracker works and where the limits are. The pack is one of the free guides on our Free ChatGPT Downloads page. If you only want the file, jump to the download.

What are the best AI prompts for job seekers?

The best prompts give ChatGPT your real facts and ask for one specific, limited job. They do not ask it to make you sound impressive. A useful prompt has three parts.

  • The task. Say exactly what you want, such as a research checklist or a polite follow up.

  • Your facts. Fill in square brackets with details that are true, and nothing else.

  • A safety line. Ask ChatGPT to use only the facts you give it and to mark any gaps instead of guessing.

Every prompt in the free pack follows that pattern, and the prompt page opens with a reminder to ask for clear wording based only on the facts you provide. If you want a wider bank of everyday prompts afterwards, our 300 best ChatGPT prompts guide is a good next step.

What is in the free 30-day job search plan?

The PDF is a 9 page, A4 printable plan called 30-Day Job Search Plan with ChatGPT. It breaks the month into small daily actions with tick boxes, so you are never staring at a blank page wondering what to do next.

Week

Focus

Example actions

Week 1

Get clear on your target

Choose three role types that fit your skills and interests, then write a short description of your target role.

Week 2

Build your materials

Gather your work history in one place and check names, dates and achievements against your records.

Week 3

Reach out

Send one brief networking message, and ask one person for a short informal chat, making it easy to decline.

Week 4

Follow up and review

Send a concise follow up where a reasonable time has passed, then review the month and choose your next three actions.

Alongside the 30 daily actions you get a weekly review page, a 12 row application tracker and 30 prompts in six groups. You can print and follow the plan without any account. You only need ChatGPT, or a similar tool, when you want help with the prompts. The plan is a guide rather than a test, so adjust the pace to suit your life.

Which ChatGPT prompts for job seekers can you copy today?

Here are 12 of the 30 prompts from the pack, two from each of the six groups. Fill in every square bracket with your own true details, then check what comes back before you use it.

Choose and compare roles

  • Help me identify role types that fit these skills and interests: [skills] and [interests]. Ask questions before suggesting options.

  • Sort these role requirements into essential, useful and unclear: [requirements]. Do not assume I meet any of them.

Research an organisation

  • Help me make a research checklist for [organisation] and [role type]. Tell me which details I should verify from reliable sources.

  • From these public details I provide, suggest thoughtful questions about the organisation's work: [details]. Do not add outside claims.

Write networking messages

  • Draft a brief networking message to [person] about [shared connection or reason]. Keep it warm, direct and easy to answer.

  • Make this message clearer and more considerate without changing its facts: [draft message].

Ask for an informal chat

  • Draft a polite request for a short informal chat with [person] about [topic]. Make it clear that declining is fine.

  • Help me prepare a short introduction for an informal chat using these true details: [details].

Send thank you notes

  • Draft a concise thank you to [person] for [specific help]. Include one detail from our conversation: [detail].

  • Check this thank you note for clarity and tone. Point out anything that sounds too formal or too familiar: [note].

Plan respectful follow ups

  • Draft a brief follow up about my application to [organisation] for [role type], submitted on [date]. Keep the tone courteous.

  • Make this follow up shorter and easier to answer, without adding urgency or unsupported details: [draft].

What does a filled-in prompt look like?

Illustrative example, not a test we ran: "Help me make a research checklist for a regional housing association and a customer support adviser role. Tell me which details I should verify from reliable sources."

A reply to a prompt like this would normally be a list of things to look up, such as the organisation's aims, recent news and the wording of the job description. Your job is to check each point on the employer's own website before you rely on it.

How does the application tracker work?

Many people lose track of applications within a couple of weeks. The tracker page in the PDF has seven columns: Company, Role, Date applied, Contact, Status, Follow-up date and Notes. You get 12 blank rows to print and fill in by hand.

The idea is simple. Use one row per application, keep the notes short, and add a follow up date only when you need one. This shortened table uses made-up names to show how filled-in rows might look.

Company

Role

Date applied

Status

Follow-up date

Example Housing Group

Customer adviser

2 November

Applied online

9 November

Sample Retail Ltd

Store supervisor

4 November

Informal chat booked

11 November

Illustration Council

Admin officer

6 November

Waiting to hear

13 November

On Day 23 of the plan you check the tracker and add any missing dates, status notes or contacts. You can paste a few rows into ChatGPT, with company and contact names removed, and use prompt 27 from the pack: "Help me decide whether a follow up is appropriate based on these dates and messages: [details]. Explain any uncertainty." It can explain its reasoning, but the decision stays with you.

Can ChatGPT help with CVs, cover letters and interviews?

Yes, for drafting, tidying and practising. Many graduates already use it that way. In the Luminate Early Career Survey 2025, reported by Prospects, 43% of graduates used AI to edit their cover letters and CVs, 35% used it to write them from scratch, 29% used it to practise and prepare for interviews and 26% relied on it to help answer application form questions.

Notice the gap between editing and writing from scratch. Prospects advises using AI to enhance or edit your documents rather than to create them entirely, because you will need to speak confidently about everything you have shared once you reach an interview.

Good uses include summarising a job advert, spotting the skills it asks for, structuring your own examples with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) and generating practice questions. For a step-by-step CV method, the free PDF How to Write a CV with ChatGPT covers it.

What should ChatGPT never do in a job application?

Treat ChatGPT as a drafting and practice partner, never as a source of facts about you. Civil Service Careers, which publishes a candidate guide to AI in recruitment, says AI must not be used to inflate or invent your skills and experience, to complete assessments such as situational judgement and numerical tests, or to produce responses during an interview. It adds that applicants are asked to confirm their information is true, and that applications may be rejected where AI is used inappropriately.

  • Never let it invent experience. OpenAI's own help centre warns that ChatGPT can produce fabricated quotes, studies and references, and can sound confident when it is wrong.

  • Check every detail. Compare names, dates and achievements with your records before you send anything. Our guide to how accurate ChatGPT's information is explains how to spot errors.

  • Follow the employer. Prospects notes that many companies now include statements about disclosing AI use in job adverts or applications. Read each one before you apply.

  • Stay out of live tests. Do not use it to complete aptitude or personality tests, or to answer questions in a live interview, unless the employer clearly says you can.

  • Protect private details. Leave out ID numbers, full addresses and anything confidential about your current employer. Our ChatGPT privacy guide covers the risks in plain English.

Frequently asked questions

What are good AI prompts for job seekers?

Good prompts name one clear task, include only true facts and tell ChatGPT to mark gaps instead of guessing. The free pack has 30, covering role research, networking messages, informal chats, thank you notes and follow ups.

Can I use ChatGPT to write my CV?

You can use it to organise and polish a CV, but the facts must come from you. Paste your real work history, ask it to improve clarity, then check every name, date and achievement. Prospects recommends using AI to edit your documents rather than creating them entirely.

Will employers know if I used AI?

Not always, but you should not count on it going unnoticed. Prospects says most employers know applicants use AI tools, and some use software or their own judgement to spot AI-written text. Using your own voice and real examples protects you, and so does following any AI rules in the advert.

Is the 30-day job search plan really free?

Yes. The PDF is free to download and print, with no sign-up. You only need ChatGPT, or a similar tool, if you want help with the prompts.

Can ChatGPT help me practise interview questions?

Yes. Paste in a job description and ask for likely questions, then practise answering with your own examples. Civil Service Careers lists mock interview questions as an acceptable use, but says AI must not be used to produce responses during a real interview.

Should I paste my CV into ChatGPT?

Only if you are comfortable with it, and with personal details removed. Take out your address, phone number, ID numbers and anything confidential about an employer. Read our privacy guide first and check your own data settings in ChatGPT.
